Kapalbhati (Bhalbhati) Pranayama

Kapalabhati, often referred to as the “skull-shining breath,” is both a pranayama practice and one of the six Shatkarmas (yogic cleansing techniques) described in Hatha Yoga. It is renowned for its powerful cleansing and invigorating effects on the body and mind.

This technique involves forceful exhalations followed by passive inhalations, performed rhythmically and continuously. The word Kapalabhati originates from two Sanskrit terms:

  • Kapala, meaning “skull,” and
  • Bhati, meaning “to shine” or “to illuminate.”

It needs active, rapid, forceful exhalations and passive inhalations.

 Do it with both nostrils, right nostril and left nostril.

Contra-indications:

High blood pressure, heart related problems, ulcer, fever, constipation, excessive restlessness, anger and hernia.

Benefits:

  1. Kapalbhati eliminates phlegm and mucus from the body. In other words it reduces or clears excessive secretions of thick, sticky substances produced by the mucous membranes in the respiratory and digestive systems.
  2. Clears the Respiratory Tract: Cleansing Effect: The continuous exhalation creates a vacuum that facilitates the removal of respiratory blockages, promoting clearer breathing. Forceful Exhalation: During Kapalbhati, the diaphragm and abdominal muscles contract forcefully to push air out of the lungs. This action helps dislodge and expel excess mucus from the nasal passages, throat, and lungs.
  3. Exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide is increased hence respiratory ailments including chronic bronchitis, tuberculosis, asthma, chronic lungs diseases
  4. It improves digestive functions, also gives good internal massage to abdominal organs.
  5. It increases alertness, wakes up the mind. So don’t do it at night before sleep. It energizes the mind. If you are tired after working for long time, this pranayama will recharge you. Doing this in the morning gives very good effects.
  6. It is the best practice to purify frontal section of the brain.
  7. Cleansing: Removes toxins, clears nasal passages, and purifies the respiratory system.
  8. Invigorates the Mind: Enhances focus, mental clarity, and energizes the brain.
  9. Improves Respiratory Health: Strengthens lung capacity and oxygenates the blood.
  10. Aids Digestion: Stimulates abdominal organs and improves digestive efficiency.

If there is any metal installed in the body except gold and metal singing bowl therapy should not be done. When sound vibration get contact with any metal, they also vibrates. As a result they try to disconnect from the body. Even if there is any unnatural metalic things or any harmful substances in the body, they also try to disconnect from the body and come out which purifies the body. There is no any specific harm if you do singing bowl healing if metals are installed in the body, it just tries to disconnect and remove from the body. Since we are talking about metal on the teeth, they also get vibrated. So, it is suggested not to do head therapy, facial, neck and shoulder therapy for those people since it is very close to teeth.Rest of the healings which are little away from the teeth- like foot therapy, thigh, leg, hips, back therapy, chakra healing, aura cleaning etc. are okay to do.
