What is Swara Yoga?

Swara in Sanskrit refers to both a sound or musical note and the constant movement of air through one of the nostrils. Yoga, as we know, signifies union or harmony. Therefore, Swara Yoga is the discipline and science of attaining universal consciousness by becoming mindful, observing, and then governing or directing the movement of breath through the nostrils.

Swara Yoga is an ageless tantric knowledge that systematically studies the flow of breath through the nostrils (or swara) in relation to the periods of the moon, the period of day i.e. time, and direction. We often combine breath techniques with pranayama. But, Swara Yoga emphasizes the connection between breath and various cosmic factors and worldly activities. Cosmic factors includes the positions and movement of the planets, sun, moon, stars, etc. and worldly affairs include seasons, and time of day, along with the individual’s physical and mental state. The practice involves aligning one’s actions with these subtle relationships. For instance, by understanding the phases of the moon and observing which nostril is dominant before getting out of bed, you can ensure that the corresponding foot touches the ground first. This simple practice is believed to align you with the successful flow of energy from the cosmos, enhancing your chances of success throughout the day. It also addresses planetary influences, astral forces, and the negative effects of zodiacal planets and constellations

Swara yoga is a very ancient science that dates back to before the Vedic period. Originally, it was a closely guarded secret, accessible only to a select few, including kings and dedicated practitioners. This sacred knowledge was preserved by the ancient sages and saints who received it intuitively from the Deific.

Swarw Yoga, a divine science, was reserved for sadhaks—those who had transcended worldly and mundane concerns, who possessed a spiritual outlook and the dedication of a true disciple. The purpose of this exclusivity was to preserve the purity of this precious knowledge, ensuring it did not fall into the wrong people. Swara Yoga was employed for annual forecasts and various prophecies, as well as to address mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual issues, helping individuals overcome their challenges.

Additionally, it served practical purposes for householders (Grahastha) in their daily lives. It was commonly used for common future prophecies and specific situations, such as influencing the outcome of wars according to the king’s wishes or aiding in the conception of a great child. Swara Yoga was also employed to select auspicious times for special endeavors, such as starting new ventures, embarking on journeys, waging wars, or constructing buildings. It was instrumental in creating harmony in world affairs, predicting the time of various events in life including death.

Swara yoga comes from the Agama Shastras and from Shaiva Tantra. Swara Yoga is a precious knowledge given by Lord Siva to his wife Shakti. Shiva is the symbol of supreme consciousness and Shakti is the symbol of Supreme energy. In this text, Lord Siva is the guru (master/teacher) and Shakti is the disciple. Lord Shiva teaches Swara yoga when she asks questions about nature and the supreme forces of the existence.

By mastering the principles of Swara Yoga, one can transcend the negative impacts of destiny and attain heightened consciousness. Swara Yoga practices, which focus on breath, were traditionally used to comprehend the fundamental forces governing life, cognize the nature of the universe, and observe the impact of the elements on the body and mind by analyzing different breathing patterns. Additionally, these practices were employed to surpass the boundaries of the mind.

The intriguing aspect of Swara Yoga is that by simply being conscious of the swara (dominant nostril) in connection to your surroundings, you can influence the outcomes of your activities. Essentially, you can determine the most successful course of action and follow it. For example, you can check which nostril is dominant before leaving your house, consider the direction you’re heading, and choose the appropriate foot to take the first step with, ensuring success and positive results in everything that follows.
